Dialectical Materialism
Karsten Schubert Gallery Exhibition - Aspects of British Sculpture since the 1960s. London. September 2019.
Siberian Larch tables. 3500 x 2500 x 750mm
An exhibition conceived by Karsten Schubert to showcase a group of six groundbreaking scultpors: Anthony Caro, William Turnbull, Barry Flanagan, Alison Wilding, Richard Long and Rachel Whiteread.
Our contribution to this exhibition during the Frieze Art fair was a pair of large scale tables for the display of smaller scale sculptures and maquettes. Built from Siberian Larch planks and assembled in situ, the simple trestle legs and materiality were a nod to the historic horse stable past of the space, and timber truss roof structure. The table surface was very deliberately not painted plinth, but instead chosen to the reflect the studio scale of the artworks and hopefully compliment their rich a varied raw materialities.
The tables were consciously designed with minimal fixings for future reuse. Either as display surfaces again, but equally as raw material for other yet to be determined furniture pieces.
